John grew up in Chicago, IL and relocated to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in 1996. John started boxing competitively at the age of 15 and after retiring from competition he began to manage, promote and train professional fighters. At one point, John handled up to 38 fighters simultaneously. Most of the fighters that John trained agree that John is a perfectionist as well as a “one of a kind strategist” who insists on teaching technique and form to his students as opposed to concentrating solely on conditioning.
After only 1 year under John’s guidance, unranked lightweight boxer Louie Lomeli was set to challenge the number one ranked lightweight contender in the world, undefeated John Duplesis who held an unblemished record of 27 victories with no losses. The ABC’s Wide World of Sports nationally televised bout was considered one of the years biggest upsets in boxing with Lomeli winning a unanimous decision. Lomeli would soon after go on to challenge Pernell Whitaker for the IBF Lightweight Championship of The World which was also nationally televised on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. John guided Lomeli to the number one world ranked position in 3 different weight divisions before Lomeli retired in 1995.
In 1989, John had the opportunity to train and prepare James Flowers for the biggest fight of his career against Detroit’s hometown favorite former WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion Leonzer Barber. With the judges scorecards too close for comfort, John devised a game plan for his fighter that would assure a victory. The plan was executed brilliantly and Flowers sent his opponent down in the final round of the bout. The victory secured the bout as one of the biggest upsets in boxing in 1989.
John also handled the professional career of Olympic Bronze medalist Kenny Gould who compiled an amateur record which consisted of over 300 wins. Gould went on to turn professional at the end of 1988 and racked up an impressive record of 26 wins against only 2 defeats and captured the IBO Welterweight World Championship in 1992. John also guided the career of Mike Johnson. Johnson went on to become the Jr. Welterweight World Champion by kncocking out Englands Pat Barrett in 2 rounds. Johnson successfully defended his title in 1993 by knocking out Aaron Shockley in 3 rounds.
John’s first encounter in the gym industry was prior to John’s relocating to South Florida when he co-owned the “Windy City Gym”. One of John’s many duties included training and conditioning hundreds of amateur and professional fighters that walked through the doors.
John is the Chairman of the International Boxing Organization (IBO) which he founded in 1992. The IBO which supervises World Championship Title fights is considered one of the most credible and prestigious sanctioning organizations in the industry today. The IBO is the only governing body that has developed its own computerized ranking system which ranks the Top 100 Fighters in each of the 17 weight classes.
John's latest achievement was his induction into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame which took place in June of 2011.
John is E.R.P.C. Board Certified, AED and CPR Certified as well as a registered USA Boxing Certified and Insured coach/trainer.
